Recent run: Last night, 4.3 miles with Brady and her pups Chloe and Indie on what will likely be one of the last nice nights of fall.
On Tuesday night I went to an Intro to CrossFit class at CrossFit Minneapolis. I follow a few bloggers who do CrossFit (my faves include CNC, Ash, and BlondePonytail) and they're all pretty ripped (and runners!). While I've always considered myself a runner, I totally dig the CrossFit philosophy and thought that it would be a great way to build general fitness and prevent injury.
I got to the CrossFit box and was immediately intimidated by all the extremely fit people. This was not an afternoon walk around Lake Calhoun. This was serious. I started sweating.
After a brief overview of the whats and whys of CrossFit from our coach Tyler, he walked us through our first WOD (workout of the day). It included the following:
- 400m row
- 40 air squats
- 30 sit ups
- 20 push ups (your chest had to touch the floor!)
- 10 pull ups (obvi not doing these; used hanging rings instead)
- 200m row
All of this was "for time" which meant as fast as you possibly can. 6 minutes and 43 seconds later, I was dying. My legs were shaking and I was a sweaty mess. Truth: My legs gave out on the first air squat I tried after the row.
It was humbling. And awesome.
What kept me from signing up on the spot was cost. It's not cheap. So for now I'm doing a little more research but it's pretty likely you'll see me in the beginners class in the very near future.
