Henderson Sauerkraut Day Race Recap VIDEO!

From the girl who rarely posts pictures of herself,  a video race recap of the 2011 Henderson Sauerkraut Day Fun Run. I don't know whether to apologize in advance or say "You're welcome."

To preface what you're about to see, my brother Andrew met Olympian Carrie Tollefson at National Running Day where she was filming for her show C Tolle Run. Andrew immediately fell in love with her and adopted her catchphrase of "Get after it!" as his own. You can catch his cameo appearances in two of her episodes- National Running Day and Discovering Duluth. He also got the idea to create a copycat show called "See Andy's Runs" (which has more to do beer shits than running. This will make more sense in a second.)

Anyway, Andrew was in Le Sueur last night hanging out with some friends and said he would come watch the race. He called me at 3 a.m. and needed me to let him in our parent's house. When I went to wake him up this morning, the room smelled …

Flipping the Switch

A lot of people have starting writing about their fall marathon training schedules having kicked off. Since I'm not running until November, I still have a few weeks before my training officially begins. However, I've turned the corner from "running while following a tentative schedule" to "training." This means a few things are going to change for me, such as:

Stop skimping on sleep. Did you know that elite runners typically take naps throughout the day? I once read that Kara Goucher (pre-baby) got up around 9am, had breakfast, ran her first workout, ate lunch, napped, woke up at 5pm, ran again, ate dinner and went to bed. I'm not that lucky. For me, it means earlier bed times, like lights out by 9:00. Feel free to yell at me if you see me on Twitter or Facebook any later than that.

Use my recovery runs to recover. I suck at this. All of my recovery runs should be around an 8:30 pace. I never do this but need to start.

Start warming up (form drills, etc…

Getting my vacation on

Last Friday I headed down to NC for my cousin's wedding. The majority of the fam made the trip so it's turned into a pseudo maternal family reunion.

Here's a shot from the wedding with a few of my siblings. I totally wrecked the picture by putting chocolate cake all over my front teeth, thinking my mom would notice before she took the picture. She didn't.

We tried again but it didn't turn out as well as the first.
Now fifteen of us are at a lovely house that's a mere fifty yards from the ocean. There has been lots of swimming in the ocean, lots of eating, and lots of running (for me at least). I'm trying to not compulsively check my work email but I've been failing thus far.

Maybe I will have a bottle of wine tonight and throw my Blackberry into the ocean.

Starting over

After destroying my Mizuno Riders at the Trail Mix Relay in April (note to self: wear old shoes on a muddy trail run), I bought a the new, updated model. I wore them a few times and they felt... different. I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong but then I went for a 12 miler that ended like this:


Not one to give in easily, I kept running in them. My feet started to hurt in ways they never have.  I switched back to an old pair that was buried in my closet and have been running in those for a few weeks. With my mileage starting to pick up, I knew I couldn't run much longer in shoes that were already worn out.
I've been running in Mizuno Riders for years now. Years. The process of finding a new shoe is exhausting. Needless to say I was procrastinating on beginning the whole process. With vacation and a couple of races looming, I bit the bullet tonight.  After some time at Marathon Sports, I ended up with these:
